The monastery of Nikolje

NikoljeThe monastery of Nikolje is situated in the picturesque gorge of the Nikolje River, at the slopes of mountain Rudnik, in the village of Satornja. The church dedicated to St.Nicholas was built in 1425 by Nicola Dorjenovic, a respectable squire of despot Stefan Lazarevic.

According to numerous inscriptions on the church facade, it is evident that during 15th and 16th centuries this church had had a well developed spiritual life.
During 18th and 19th the monastery was important cultural, religious and political center of Rudnik area. It was burned and ruined several times by Turks.
The monastery was rebuilt in the period of the first Serbian Uprising.
The interior of the church was decorated during the ruling of Duke Aleksandar Karadjordjevic.

The Monastery of Annunciation

The monastery of Annunciation in the village of Stragari is a monument probably dating from XIV century, although it is not certain who its founder was nor is the exact time of its construction known. The narthex, which is taller than the church itself, was added in XVII century, and at the same time the church was decorated by frescoes. It is, however, obvious that the artist was inexperienced and had little knowledge and skill. The iconostasis, with well painted doors, is from XVIII and XIX centuries.

The monastery of Voljavca

The monastery of Voljavca, with its church dedicated to Archangel Michael, in the village of Stragari, is the endowment of Mihailo Koncinovic, a powerful feudal master who lived in the second half of the XV century. The church was renewed in 1796-1797. It was in the premises of the monastery residence that the first session of the Legal Council of Karadjordje's Serbia was held, with arch priest Mateja Nenadovic as chairman. The monastery owns a small collection of icons and other items of artistic and historical value from XVIII and XIX centuries.
